A Brief Beer Fest History

Munich recently celebrated its 200th Oktoberfest. This is one solid effort for an event that first kicked off back in 1810, as a symbol of one king’s profession of undying love for his queen. When Bavarian Prince Ludwig chose to wed Princess Therese, he threw one hell of an engagement party. Little did he know what the event would become. Today, Oktoberfest is the biggest beer festival on the planet and one of the biggest festivals in existence, with many Oktoberfest celebrations extending to local pubs and bars around the world.

Originally Oktoberfest was set up by Prince Ludwig, as a celebration of his engagement to Princess Therese, and the whole event took part as a public horse race (modeled on the structure of the ancient Olympic Games). The people of Munich loved it so much that it became an annual tradition ever since, with only the most catastrophic events such as war and plague preventing it from standing. To give an idea of the sheer grandeur of Oktoberfest – today, 6.5 million litres of beer are consumed, with around 6 million visitors heading to Oktoberfest each year, to continue the epic tradition by raising their steins in synchrony to “ein prosit” (a toast).
